Jo Salvages Draw for Corinthians

Brazilian forward Jo scored an injury-time goal to save Corinthians the blushes against Botafogo in their weekend encounter. The match played in Sao Paulo weekend saw both teams locked 2-2 after full time.

Former Manchester City striker found the net in injury time as the hosts salvaged a point in the tense encounter. The home side was trailing 180 seconds into stoppage time after Kalou had put the visiting side in the lead just a quarter of an hour from full time. Earlier Fagner had given the hosts the lead in the10th minute. He scored from the spot-kick after he was brought down at the top of the box. The lead for them was however short-lived as Nazario equalized for Botafogo in the 20th minute of the match.

This was the 5th time Jo has scored for Corinthians. Another player the Corinthians need to thank is their goalkeeper Cassio. He was busy under the bar throughout the match and showed why he is just the number one goalie for them. Corinthian are currently placed 9th in Brazil Serie A standings. They have so far played 7 matches.

The result comes just days after the club signed a 55 million US Dollars deal with a pharmaceutical company to rename their stadium. The 49000 capacity stadium will now be called the Neo Quimica arena. A part of the proceeds from the deal will go into repaying a loan the club had taken from Caixa, the Spanish bank.

The Sao Paulo based club will receive the money in annual installments and their partnership could also see the company sponsor the club’s jersey. This is a 20-year deal and will go a long way in taking the club management’s mind away from debt issues and concentrate more on improving its prospects on the field.
